Hey there!
Are you a young BIPOC journalist looking for a paid gig and some mentorship? The Rover is partnering with Journalists for Human Rights to help lend our platform to underrepresented voices in Canadian journalism. We’re looking for candidates who are hungry for change and want to help us produce more of the award-winning journalism our readers have come to expect.
The Rover specializes in stories written from the bottom up. We don’t play politics, we get our boots to the ground and we talk to people whose lives are affected by decisions made at City Hall, in Quebec City or on Parliament Hill. If you want to be a part of a team that will listen to your ideas — NO MATTER HOW WILD THEY ARE — and encourage you to find your voice as a reporter, we’d love to have you aboard. Whether you’re a writer, a video journalist, a radio reporter, an illustrator or a TikTok kid, all we care about is finding the best stories we can and getting them in front of our audience.
This paid fellowship lasts six months, at about 15-20 hours per week, to do the kind of reporting you’re passionate about. If this is something you want to be part of, send us your CV and pitch us a story by May 29. Let’s make great journalism together.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
This fellowship is open to early-career BIPOC journalists living in Quebec. These are some criteria that will be considered to result in a successful application.
Experience: Two years of practicing journalism, whether at a student publication, local radio, local TV station or just a combination of internships and freelancing gigs.
Skills: The ideal candidate will have a strong command of English and at least a functional command of French, a working knowledge of CP Style, and an interest in storytelling across diverse formats. While not essential, knowing how to shoot/edit video is an asset.
HOW TO APPLY
To see if we’re a good fit, please email us your CV along with a pitch for a story you might like to pursue over the course of your fellowship. It should include a solid focus statement, at least two potential sources, and an explanation as to why you are the person who can deliver this story. Five hundred words MAX, by May 29.
